How Important Is Passion - Workology
How Important Is Passion - Workology Can Balance and Passion Coexist? A recent Ask A Manager question got me thinking about the importance of passion at work. Allisons reader asked if it was necessary to fake passion to get a job; if it was ever ok to not be all that enthusiastic about a potential gig. Allison responded that no, you dont ever need to take passion, but if your potential employer does cause or faith-based work than passion is important. Its only natural that an environmental non-profit, for example, would want employees who really do care about the environment and want to make a difference in the world. And its obvious that a church would prefer to employ people who believe in its teachings and who can be a good example of them. Not everyone who works in the non-profit or faith sectors is passionate about their work but a hell of a lot of them are not least because you have to be passionate to put up with the low pay and long hours thats common in such work. But what about employers outside of these fields that have a comparatively strong sense of mission? Can Balance and Passion Coexist? Every employer wants to you do more than just show up and fill out your timecard to care about your job and doing it well but not every employer demands that you live for the job. There are plenty of employers that are trying to build healthy company cultures that balance enthusiasm for the work with enthusiasm for life outside of work, even encouraging their workers to pursue outside interests and side hustles. These employers are confident that employees having passions beyond their product doesnt take away from their quality of work. They know that having hobbies and families and outside interests actually improves the work, helping you see workplace problems in a new light and bring new experiences to the table. On the other hand, there are employers with so strong a sense of mission that everything outside of work seems like a threat. You know the type. Dont want to put in overtime to catch up on reports? You just arent committed. A 120 hour week sounds unreasonable? You must want this project to fail. Even if you started out passionate about the job, over work saps your creativity and your ability to commit. This is passion tipped over into toxicity, a sense of mission so strong that it cant admit anything else is important. And its what candidates fear, when they worry about the importance of displaying passion in interviews. In the case of the Ask A Manager question I linked above, I find it difficult to believe that Allisons reader has no passion for the work at all. Someone who genuinely doesnt care wouldnt even be worried about not loving the gig enough theyd just fake it in the interview, through their probation, and then slowly let their performance decline into a comfortable cruising speed of mediocre. What her reader is worried about is fitting into the company culture, and finding an employer that believes in the same norms of work life balance as she does. In other words, shes looking for an employer that understands passion the same way she does: as something that ebbs and flows. All passion all the time is really just obsession, and while some entrepreneurs make that sound cool and aspirational, its not something anyone should demand from their employees. Its ok to have off days or even off months, to be more excited by some projects than others, and to not always be a perfect employer brand ambassador. No employer can or indeed should expect 100% passion 100% of the time.

Public and Private Online Messages
Public and Private Online Messages When to post an online comment publicly and when to post one privately should always be carefully deliberated. If there is any doubt how your comment will be received or if it could reflect negatively on you, dont post it. There seems to be no shortage of public comments to inspire another blog reminding those to think before they post just as you should think before you speak. The difference is your oral comment will be a brief moment in time directed at a few rather than a permanent post in cyberspace for an audience of millions of people. So often I see comments which are unfounded, rude, offensive or simply inappropriate. Surely this kind of behaviour and lack of professionalism is not generated from a conscious intent or purpose. Many will see a negative comment and immediately give the author a superstitious excuse such as, they must have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed. We simply dont want to accept the spread of ill will as intentional. In fact, I see so many inappropriate comments that Ive decided it cant possibly be a desire to publicly humiliate yourself or establish a negative personal brand but rather a lack of knowledge in the use of the various communication tools available. Take note of the following to ensure there is no mistake when you make a decision to post a private or a public online message: When responding to an email the reply tab at the top allows you to Reply to Sender or Reply to All; choose wisely. Text messaging from most phones allows for multiple recipients and forwarding. If youre using Twitter, Whats happening, retweets and @mentions are public. To send a private message select the recipient and choose the small envelope to the right. Facebook allows you to post on your own wall and on a friends wall as well as commenting on other comments, tagging, and so much more which is all public however, you are able to select Privacy Settings from the drop down box under Account to allow friends of friends or just friends or a custom setting to sensor who will see your information. If you want to send a private message, select the recipient and then select Message at the top right. Keep in mind that although messages can be shared between two people the option is available to add people to the conversation in which case they will be able to see all the messages in the stream. There is also the option to forward any or all the messages to another party. Linkedin is pretty consistent with many others with the option to compose a private message which can be sent to an established connection, to invite a new connection or initiate an introduction to connect. Privacy settings are available by selecting Settings from the drop down box under your name at the top right. Depending on the settings you choose, most of your activity will be public and posting an update will be shared with your connections. Choose your settings carefully and if you decide your comments deserve public attention be sure the content will be suitable for many years to come!

Is your amplifier satisfactory or would a quality headset be better? The sound will be significant, both to hear your questioner and for you to plainly be heard. How is your camera set? By and large, cameras over the screen permit you to see your questioners face while you are looking toward them, yet a camera off to the side or underneath you will give the impression you arent focusing, or more terrible, surrender them a look your noses. Ron Mitchell, founder, and CEO of Virgil Careers, plots why experts should concentrate on their vocation way, focus on patterns, and maintain a strategic distance from the gig economy. What is a vocation path?A vocation way is a direction for proficient development inside an industry, an organization, or a practical zone, as per Mitchell. Why should you center around your vocation path?Professional jobs are very more cross-utilitarian than they used to be, as indicated by Mitchell.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders' magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Back in the day, the bookkeepers did bookkeeping, the advertisers did promoting, the designers did building, and that was it, Mitchell said.In present day workplaces, individuals are relied upon to wear numerous caps, implying that experts need substantially more various ranges of abilities to exceed expectations in conventional careers.Creating a profession way permits experts to take a gander at the hole of where they are and where they need to be, discover the aptitudes they have to arrive, and progress in the direction of achieving those abilities. By illustrating aptitudes you have to create so as to land a particular position, you give your vocation a substantially more characterized and clear path. That's the way that you really end up being incredibly important, Mitchell said. How a vocation way will shield you from falling into the gig economy trapThe gig economy comprises of brief occupations, such as being a Uber driver, and keeping in mind that these can be extraordinary cash generators for individuals out of luck, they regularly don't enable an expert to advance their career.A away from of jobs you try to hold is fundamental in case you're hoping to exceed expectations in your industry. How vocation ways have changed over the yearsMitchell takes note of that profession ways used to be static, implying that somebody would find a new line of work at an organization and climb the company pecking order, from beginner to chief to executive, thus on. These days, career ways are considerably more dynamic. That's a genuine significant separation, Mitchell said in light of the fact that that implies the present experts consistently must advance and learning new skills.Additionally, this implies finding a profession way isn't as simple as it used to be, and it's not as simple to make sense of where you are on your path. And coincidentally, making sense of your way is going to change on the grounds that the activity that you have today or the activity that you're striving for… that activity may not associate with five years later, Mitchell said. This dynamic nature of the present workforce is the reason experts need to look after adaptability, track patterns and keep on creatin g pertinent expertise sets. Alexandra Levits Water Cooler Wisdom Meet Your 21st Century Customer
Alexandra Levit's Water Cooler Wisdom Meet Your 21st Century Customer We are now closer to 2020 than 2010. Whether you are a business owner or one employee out of thousands, and whether your job title is IT director or call center specialist, everyone today is in customer service. Here are eight mandates of modern customers you must heed if you want to remain competitive. Customization The era of mass production of goods and services is over. Your customer wants a certain style of shirt in a certain color and a certain size and he wants it today. Be prepared to adapt your current offerings to whatever your customers have identified they need, and think about how to price accordingly. Human contact Some automation is to be expected, but when your customer decides she needs to talk to a person, give her a person. Companies that force customers to push “0†a million times to no avail are losing business, guaranteed. This will be harder to do, but even more important, as machines take over more and more business functions. Social media responsiveness Whether they’ve had a good experience or a bad one, your customers will share it over Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook. Put a system in place to manage your properties every day so you can show them you’re listening to feedback and that you care, and so that you can put out small fires before they turn into a conflagration. Mobility Any piece of information you provide to a customer has to be mobile-accessible. That means she can do anything, anywhere, on any device. Mobility is no longer a “nice to have†but an imperative. At the same time, don’t forget the late adopters and keep your standard device support around for a while. Multiple touch points Some customers like Live Chat while others prefer to email. Some might even prefer to wait 45 minutes on the phone. I personally love when companies let me schedule the time for the customer rep to call me back. The point is, give people options and don’t limit them to getting in touch during 9-5 business hours. Self-service When it comes to simple activities like placing an order, canceling a subscription or updating an address, provide mechanisms so customers don’t have to bother you or waste their time. If you’re doing this right, your customers shouldn’t need you most of the time. For the rest of the article, visit Intuits Fast Track blog.
